[Special Feature – The Great Civilizational Transition] A New Name for Humanity: “Homo Luminous”“Beyond AI, Toward the Sacred Human of Light”

We are standing at one of the most decisive crossroads in the history of human civilization. The advent of artificial intelligence—once unimaginable just a few decades ago—is now shaking the very foundations of human identity by dissolving the boundaries of thought, perception, labor, and creation.

AI is no longer a mere auxiliary tool. It writes, creates images, and mimics human emotions and judgments. While some warn of the end of humanity and others cheer the approach of divine-like creation, we are inevitably brought face to a profound question:
"Who are we, and where are we going?"

Technological advancement is an undeniable reality—but it is not the same as human evolution. AI may accumulate data and compute logic, but the ability to contemplate the meaning of life, to reflect on suffering, and to feel awe for life and the cosmos belongs only to humans.

At this juncture, humanity must not settle for building smarter machines. We must become more awakened beings—those who recognize and embody the deeper essence of existence.

Futurists and AI experts now project that the current AI era may last no more than five years. After that, they say, humanity will face a new epoch—one that redefines the very direction of our being. And the emerging answer to who will lead that next era is becoming clearer:
The name is Homo Luminous.

What is Homo Luminous?

Derived from the Latin root lumen (light), the adjective luminous means “emitting light” or “self-illuminating.” Homo Luminous, then, is not merely one who reflects external light, but a human who radiates light from within—a being who has awakened to their consciousness, spirit, and the divine essence of the universe.

This name is not a modern invention. It appears directly in the spiritual traditions of the Q'ero people, descendants of the ancient Inca civilization in the Andes. For centuries, they have foretold a coming transformation in which Homo sapiens sapiens would evolve into Homo Luminous.

To the Q'ero, Homo Luminous is not just a new species—it is the human of light, awakened in soul, spirit, and cosmic truth. Far from mere folklore, their insight offers a powerful and timely vision of the spiritual and civilizational transformation humanity now faces.

The Korean Spirit Meets the Luminous Human

Korean culture also carries deep linguistic and philosophical resonance with this vision. In Korean, when a person’s face or a space feels bright and clear, we say it is “hwanhada (환하다)”, meaning not just light but the inner radiance that reveals truth by clearing away darkness.

The character “桓 (hwan),” meaning light or radiance, also appears in the name of Hwan-guk (桓國)—a mythic ancient Korean kingdom believed to have existed around 10,000 years ago. Literally, “Hwan-guk” means “Land of Light,” suggesting that Korea’s spiritual roots are deeply aligned with the ideals of illumination, awakening, and cosmic harmony.

Thus, the concept of Homo Luminous resonates profoundly with the spiritual DNA of Korea, forming a bridge between ancient wisdom and future humanity.

From Homo Sapiens to Homo Luminous

If Homo sapiens led material civilization through reason and survival,
Homo Luminous transcends those limitations and becomes the creator of a new civilization grounded in ethics, spirituality, and integrated consciousness.

This new human is no longer bound by endless expansion and competition driven by desire. They live in harmony with nature, coexist with others, and recognize themselves as part of the divine and the cosmos.

They are not merely thinking, acting beings—they are channels of light, spiritual presences that vibrate with life itself and embody a conscious union with the universe.

It’s Time to Change Our Name

To name something is to declare a new era.

While Homo sapiens describes our past,
Homo Luminous illuminates our future.

And from the moment we begin calling ourselves by this new name,
that future begins.

Humanity must now prepare not through technological advancement, but through an ontological leap—a shift in being itself. In the mirror that AI has held up to us, we must look again at who we are. And then, beyond that mirror, we must become the ones who open the door to a new civilization.

Declare It: I Am Homo Luminous

Homo Luminous is not a mythical ideal.

It is a living way of being—already emerging among those who have awakened.
It is the language of life for those who recognize the light within.

The time has come to turn inward, not outward—to transcend, not expand;
to rise to higher states of consciousness.

This is the true evolution that lies beyond the age of AI—
the only path through which humanity can preserve its essence and rediscover its purpose.

And now, we must say it:

“I am Homo Luminous. I am light. I am divine.”

Ultimately, we are all becoming Hwan—
beings of radiant light.
