We commonly remember "Arirang" as a folk song steeped in the Han (unresolved grief) of parting—a song of resentment toward a lover who leaves, wishing their feet would ache before they could even walk ten li. However, if we delve deep into the etymological roots of Arirang, we find something far beyond simple melancholy: a "Philosophy of Light" and the very origins of humanity.
1. The Union of ‘Ari’ and ‘Rang’: Invoking the Being of Light
While numerous hypotheses exist regarding the origin of Arirang, the most luminous interpretation begins with an analysis of archaic Korean.
"Ari" (아리): In ancient languages, this term signifies "brilliant," "radiant," or "dazzling." We find its traces in words like Arisu (the Great/Luminous Water) and Aridapda (beautiful/radiant and fair). It symbolizes a state as brilliant as the sun.
"Rang" (랑): This was used as a suffix meaning "companion" or "person." It appears in titles like Hwarang (Flower Youth) or Sinrang (Groom), denoting a being of noble value.
Etymologically, Arirang means "a person who dwells with the light"—in other words, a "Being of Light." To sing Arirang is to awaken the divine light within oneself and declare one's intent to walk the path of that light.
2. Crossing the Pass: A Journey of Enlightenment
The "Pass" (Gogae) in the lyrics of Arirang is not merely a geographical hill. It represents the hardships of life and the threshold of consciousness in the search for the self. "Crossing the Arirang Pass" is an expression of a powerful will to pass through the tunnel of suffering and return to the essential state of "Light."
While many perceive Arirang as a sad song, its melody actually contains the energy of moving through sorrow toward Joy. The essence of Arirang lies in the process of letting go of the "Small Self" (the ego that feels abandoned) to meet the "True Self" (the Great Self).
3. A Modern Interpretation: BE THE Arirang
Today, Arirang is no longer a folk song preserved only in museums. Just as the "Be the Reds" slogan ignited a fierce passion within us during the 2002 World Cup, we now live in an era that requires the slogan "BE THE Arirang."
This transcends a nationalistic cry to "be Korean." Instead, it expands into a universal human message: "Discover the light within you, and become a being that illuminates the world with that radiant energy." Arirang is, in fact, an "Invitation to Light" that the Korean people extend to the world.
You Are Arirang
The origin of Arirang is not confined to a specific era or place. It began with the universal human longing for "brightness."
When we sing Arirang, we are not merely singing a tune. We are remembering that we were all originally "Ari-Rang" (Beings of Light). It is time to redefine Arirang—moving beyond a song of sorrowful parting to a solemn vow to become a self-shining presence.
