'방탄소년단'(BTS)이 23일 밤(한국시간) 유엔(UN) 웹TV와 대한민국 외교부 페이스북, 유튜브 등을 통해 공개된 '제75차 UN 총회'에서 특별연사로 나섰다.

방탄소년단은 앞서 지난 2018년 9월24일 미국 뉴욕 UN 본부 신탁통치이사회 회의장에서 열린 유니세프 청년 어젠다 '제너레이션 언리미티드'에 대표 연설자로 나선 이후 2년 만에 UN 총회 연설을 했다. 이번 영상에서 ‘자신을 사랑하자’는 지난 ‘LOVE MYSELF’의 연장선상에서 절망에서 벗어나 서로를 향한 따뜻한 연대로 "다시 새로운 세상을 살아가자" "삶은 계속될 것입니다. 우리 함께 살아냅시다."(Life goes on. Let's live on.)는 희망의 메시지를 전 세계에 전했다.

Following their first invitation to the UN General Assembly in 2018, BTS returned to build on their previous message of “LOVE MYSELF” to impart for 2020 a message of “Let’s live on in a new world”, breaking free from despair and supporting one another in warm solidarity. 

다음은 방탄소년단 일곱 멤버 연설 전문이다.  여섯 멤버들은 한국어로 이야기를 했고, 리더 김남준(RM)은 영어로 말했다. 세계인들을 위하여 한국어와 영어를 모았다.

▲RM: 감사합니다. 이 자리에 초대해주신 유엔 관계자들과 유니세프 총재 그리고 함께해 주시는 모든 분들께 감사드립니다. 제75회 유엔 총회를 통해 이렇게 다시 한 번 메시지를 전하는 소중한 기회를 갖게 돼 정말 영광입니다. 저는 그룹 방탄소년단의 리더 RM입니다. 

2년 전 저는 당신의 이름을 묻고, 당신의 목소리를 들려달라고 요청했습니다. 그러면서 많은 것을 상상했습니다. 대한민국의 작은 도시 일산의 소년이자, 유엔 총회에 참석한 젊은이, 그리고 세상을 살아가는 세계 시민으로, 나와 우리 앞에 놓인 무한한 가능성을 가슴 뛰게 상상했습니다. 

그러나 그 상상 속에 코로나19는 없었습니다. 월드투어가 취소되고 모든 계획이 틀어지고 저는 혼자가 되었습니다. 밤하늘을 올려다보아도 별이 보이지 않았습니다. 

“Two years ago here, I asked your name. I urged you to let me hear your voice. And I let myself be filled with imagination "As a boy from the small city of Ilsan in Korea, as a young man standing at the UNGA, as a global citizen of this world, I imagined the limitless possibilities before all of us and my heart beating with excitement,"

But covid19 was beyond my imagination. Our world tour was totally cancelled,  all of our plans went away, and I became alone,” he said. “I looked up but couldn’t see the stars at night.”

▲지민: 절망했습니다. 모든 게 무너진 것만 같았습니다. 할 수 있는 건 창밖을 내다보는 것뿐이었고, 갈 수 있는 곳은 제 방안뿐이었습니다. 어제는 전 세계의 팬분들과 함께 춤추고 노래했었는데, 오늘은 제 세계가 방 하나로 줄어든 것만 같았습니다. 그때 저의 동료들이 손을 잡아주었습니다. 함께 토닥이며, 무엇을 같이 할 수 있을까 이야기를 나눴습니다.

 Jimin: I felt hopeless. Everything fell apart. I could only look outside my window. I could only go to my room. Yesterday, I was singing and dancing with fans around the world and now my world had shrunk to a room.  And then my friends took my hand. We comforted each other and talked about what we could do together.

▲슈가: 오랜만에, 어쩌면 데뷔 후 처음으로 일상이 찾아왔습니다. 원했던 건 아니었지만, 소중한 시간이었습니다. 넓었던 세계가 순식간에 좁아지는 건 제게 굉장히 익숙한 경험입니다. 월드 투어를 하면서 화려한 조명과 팬분들 환호 속에 서 있다가, 그날 밤 방으로 돌아오면 제 세계는 겨우 몇 평짜리 좁은 공간으로 변하기 때문이지요. 좁은 방 안이었지만, 저와 우리의 세계는 넓게 펼쳐져 있었습니다. 악기와 스마트폰, 그리고 팬들이 그 세상 안에 존재했기 때문이죠.

Suga: Life became simple, maybe for the first time. It was a precious time, unwanted but welcome.  I'm used to an entire world shrinking in an instant. When I'm on tour, I stand in bright lights and loud cheers, but at night back in my room my world becomes only a few paces wide.  The room itself was small. In this world, we had our instruments, our phones and our fans.

▲뷔: 그런데 이번엔 예전과 달리 더 외롭고, 좁게 느껴졌습니다. 왜일까 한참을 생각했습니다. '아마도, 상상하는 것이 힘들어졌기 때문이 아닐까' 생각했습니다. 지금의 상황에 많이 답답하고 우울해졌지만, 메모를 하고, 노래를 만들며, 나에 대해 돌아보기도 했습니다. 여기서 포기하면 '내 인생의 주인공이 아니지', '멋진 사람은 이렇게 하겠지'라고 생각하면서요.

V: But this time it felt different. It felt lonelier and smaller. Why? I thought for a long time. I thought, maybe because it became harder to imagine. I was frustrated and depressed, but I took notes, wrote songs, and thought about who I was. I thought, "If I give up here, then I'm not the star of my life. This is what an awesome person would do."

▲제이홉: 누가 먼저였는지는 모르겠습니다. 많은 감정을 끌어안고, 우리 일곱 멤버들은 함께 음악을 만들기 시작했습니다. 그렇게 시작한 음악이기에 모든 것에 솔직할 수 있었고요. 우리의 삶은 예측할 수 없는 만큼, 정해진 답도 없습니다. 저 또한 방향만 있고 뚜렷한 방식은 없는 상태에서, 저와 우리를 믿으며 최선을 다하고 순간을 즐기며 이 자리까지 왔으니까요.

Jhope "I don't know who was first. We embraced all these emotions and the seven of us began to make music together. This is where the music came from, and this made us honest. Our lives are unpredictable. We don't know all the answers. I knew where I wanted to go, but not how I could get there. All I did to get here was trust ourselves, do my best, and love what I do."

▲진: 우리의 음악과 함께 사랑하는 멤버들과 가족, 친구들. 그동안 잊고 지냈던 나를 찾았습니다. 미래에 대한 걱정, 끊임없는 노력, 다 중요하지만 가장 중요한 건 자기 자신을 아껴주고, 격려해주고, 가장 즐겁게 해주는 일입니다. 모든 게 불확실한 세상일수록 항상 나, 너 그리고 우리의 소중함을 잃지 말아야 합니다. 저희가 지난 3년간 이야기해온 '러브 마이셀프(LOVE MYSELF)' 메시지처럼. 그리고 '아임 다이아몬드, 유 노우 아이 그로우 업(I'm diamond, you know I glow up)'이란 저희의 노래 '다이너마이트(Dynamite)'의 가사처럼 말이죠.

 Jin: I found again the people I love. The other members, my family, my friends. I found the music I love, and I found myself.  Thinking about the future and trying hard are all important. But cherishing yourself, encouraging yourself and keeping yourself happy is the most important. In a world of uncertainty, we must cherish the importance of "me," "you" and "us." That's the message of "LOVE MYSELF" we talked about for three years.  It's the message in the lyrics of our song "Dynamite." "I'm diamond, you know I glow up".

▲정국: 모두 함께 작업하던 어느 밤, RM 형은 별이 보이지 않는다고 했는데, 그때 제게 유리창에 비친 제 얼굴이 보였습니다. 우리 모두의 얼굴도 보였습니다. 그렇게 서로에게 들려주고 싶은 이야기를 노래로 만들었습니다. 불확실한 오늘을 살고 있지만 사실 변한 건 없습니다. 제가 할 수 있는 것이 있다면, 우리의 목소리로 많은 사람들에게 힘을 줄 수 있다면 우린 그러길 원하고 계속 움직일 것입니다.

Jungkook: One night we were working together. RM said he couldn't see the stars anymore, but I saw my face reflected in the window. I saw all of our faces.  Our songs became the stories we wanted to tell each other. We live in uncertainty, but really, nothing's changed. If there's something I can do, if our voices can give strength to people, then that's what we want and that's what we'll keep on doing.

▲RM: 막막할 때마다 저는 정국이의 말처럼 유리창에 비친 저의 얼굴을 떠올립니다. 그리고 2년 전 제가 이 자리에서 했던 말을 떠올립니다. "러브 유어셀프, 스피크 유어셀프(Love yourself, Speak yourself)." 지금이야말로 우리가 스스로의 얼굴을 잊지 않고, 마주해야 하는 때입니다. 필사적으로 자신을 사랑하고 미래를 상상하려고 노력했으면 합니다. 방탄소년단이 함께 하겠습니다. 우리의 내일은 어둡고, 괴롭고, 힘들지 모릅니다. 우리는 걷다가 넘어지고 엎어질지도 모릅니다. 밤이 깊을수록 별빛은 더 빛납니다. 같이 가는 길에 별이 보이지 않는다면 달빛에 의지하고, 달빛마저 없다면, 서로의 얼굴을 불빛 삼아 나아가 봅시다. 

그리고 다시 상상해 봅시다. 힘들고 지친 우리가 다시 꿈꿀 수 있기를. 좁아졌던 저의 세상이, 다시 드넓게 펼쳐지는 미래를. 언제나 깜깜한 밤이고 혼자인 것 같겠지만, 내일의 해가 뜨기 전 새벽이 가장 어둡습니다.

RM “I remember my face in the window, like Jungkook said, I remember the words I spoke here two years ago. “Love Yourself, Speak Yourself” Now more than ever, we must try to remember who we are and face who we are. We must try to love ourselves and, And imagine the future. BTS will be there with you. Our tomorrow may be dark, painful, and difficult. We might stumble or fall down. Stars shine brightest when the night is darkest. If the stars are hidden, we’ll let moonlight guide us.”

 “Let’s reimagine our world. We are huddled together tired but let’s dream again. Let’s dream about a future when our worlds can break out of our small rooms again. It might feel like it’s always night and we will always be alone but the light is always the darkest before the first light of dawn.
