[News] Senator James Patterson Boycott China Olympics

As we prepare to reunite with loved ones after another difficult year, Christmas is a time to reflect on why our values matter.

It's our liberal democratic values that have made us safe, prosperous and free, and it's no secret that these values have faced considerable pressure in 2021. Our resolve and resilience have been tested not just at home here in Victoria but abroad as well.

As Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security I have been unashamedly focused on my job to help defend Australia from the very serious challenges to our freedoms, democracy and sovereignty from foreign authoritarian regimes.

As a result of these efforts in just the last few weeks the Morrison government has taken a number of concrete steps to help keep Australians safe and free, including:

Passing a new Magnitsky-style sanctions regime to individually target foreign officials who abuse human rights, engage in corrupt conduct or threaten Australia’s national security including in the cyber-realm. I was among the first to push for these laws and I’m proud to have contributed to their passage along with like-minded colleagues. Listen to my Senate speech here.

Agreeing to not send any Australian government representatives to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. As co-Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China, I asked the Prime Minister to stand against China’s unconscionable human rights abuses which was reported by The Australian.

Passing emergency laws to counter the serious and ever present cyber threat against our critical infrastructure. Earlier this year I wrote a piece for The Australian outlining the case for new cyber powers.

Of course, all this is in addition to firm measures taken throughout the year to bolster our defence forces, intelligence sharing arrangements and strategic alliances in a rapidly deteriorating security environment, ensuring we are in the strongest position as we enter 2022.

I've always said we owe it to the public to be honest in our assessment of the risks we face, and that's why I have spoken widely in the media this year about the threat to Australia posed by the Chinese Communist Party, including in this recent documentary by Sky News Australia which has had more than 2 million views, and may be of interest to you:

Of course, we have a lot of work to do to restore freedom at home here too. I am deeply uncomfortable with the way governments, particularly here in Victoria, are clinging on to pandemic powers and continuing to impose restrictions on our liberties even after we have achieved among the world's highest vaccination rates.

I delivered a speech to the Senate on this issue last month and I will have more to say about it in the New Year.

Thank you for the support, advice and honest feedback you have provided me this year, for which I am always grateful and without which I could not do my job.

I hope you have a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

Kind regards.

Senator James Paterson
Chair, Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security
Liberal Senator for Victoria
